Lonely Planet has released this week
their Top Ten cities to visit in 2013. And somewhat surprising Addis Ababa has
sneaked in at Number 9.
"Like the Ethiopian marathon runners, Addis
(often shortened to plain ‘Addis’) is evolving at a fast pace. The fact
that the country’s economic growth should reach almost 5% in 2013 helps
create a feeling of confidence and stamina. Founded little more than a
century ago, Addis Ababa, which in Amharic means ‘New Flower’, is not
only the diplomatic capital of Africa and a thriving metropolis, but
also a groovy city that takes pride in its multifaceted assets".

In November 2012 Ethiopian Federal police had demolished more than 30,000 homes in Addis Ababa by using force. More than 30,000 head of households with their families are forced to roam the streets homeless. In the process countless residents had gotten injured and close to ten residents including an infant had died caused from the beatings they received from federal police demolishing the houses.The Mayor of Addis Ababa , Dr. Berhanu Nega and Deputy Mayor of Addis Ababa, Kefyalew Azeze, defected to the United States fearing for their lives.
