I am the proud guardian to all my current
432 kids. I have had so many more. None are my own flesh and blood or share my
skin colour, and many i am even unable to name. But they are mine and i love
them.
I must average around 20 visitors into
my office each working day, and about 90% are my kids. This explains why i
still have an “Open Door” policy. Reeves, my Director in Bogota (2004 – 08),
started one, but quickly found it impossible to maintain.
They come in for a wide variety of
different reasons, but my favourite one happened last Friday. A small black
face of one of my Kindy kids pokes her head through the door. Her face lights
up and she comes over to me with the hugest of smiles and whitest of smiles. As
she steps close to me she raises her arms as high as they will go and gives me
a loving hug and two kisses on my cheeks. She turns round and skips out of the
door again - without having even shared a word with each other. A true moment
to savour indeed – and i try to remember that i am so blessed in so many ways.
