An Early Christmas Present

I’ve been promised many things and even been given specific days when things would be ready, but this is Ethiopia and nothing has happened.

I was promised my expenses to be paid last week but nothing has happened. I was promised Internet access at home this week and nothing has happened and i have been promised a “new” car rental as my Toyota lacks any sort of steering mechanism and is simply a death trap. Nothing, zero and nada.

I finally get a call from the Secondary site saying that my cash return is now ready for me to pick up from the finance office.

I receive my payment at last, but do need to request the postal receipts back to chase up my missing boxes sent surface mail from Hong Kong at the end of June.

“Oh! You should have told us earlier. The boxes arrived weeks ago and are waiting for you in the Resources Room.”

I look at Mr A incredulously. My two boxes have my name and Head of Primary written all over them in massive block capitals and nobody has bothered to inform me. I have already had to buy myself a new coffee maker and get some more clothes fearing the boxes would never be seen again.

I should have told them? I asked about them before my arrival and even on the day i arrived in Addis and i was told a resounding "No!" Unbelievable incompetence but i can’t be angry. My boxes of treasures and some cool school resources have made it safely and after a week from Hell i finally have a memorable moment.
