Key Afer Market

Probably the most interesting market option in Lower Omo is held in Key Afer on Thursdays.

This is a great market with a variety of tribes descending in to the market place including Ari, Hamer and Bena.

 elderly Bena woman

young Hamer woman - her necklace marks her as a first wife

young Hamer - recently completed the bull-jumping and now eligible to marry

young Ari man. His pom-pom on his head shows he has killed a big animal. This guy killed a giraffe

young Ari girl

The pubs and tej houses are jam packed as the villager drink and socialize around the market place.

These days it is expected that tourists are accompanied by a “local guide” even to go round the market – usually at Birr 200. This seems a complete rip-off as the guides might not be fluent in English or the local dialects of the tribes. A very hit and miss affair.
